Keep your finger on the pulse

Words, phrases and idioms that create vivid images are "eye-catching," "catchy" and I can "see" it in my mind's eye. I notice I can retain longer memory of the descriptive words, phrases or idiom.

An example sentence I found online:

一位成功的政治家是一個對選民有深刻了解的人。

A successful politician is one who keeps his finger on the pulse of the electorate.

For example, when I hear the idiom, "keep your finger on the pulse," the image pops up in my head.

Nan Chan - Chapter 108 : Inquiry • Lianyin

I think of Chinese medical treatment. The doctor has his/her fingers on the patient's pulse and find out what internally causes illness. The treatment may be done within a few return visits. Each treatment interview is to let the patient keep track of development of the situation. So, it makes sense that "to keep your finger on the pulse" is to be constantly aware of the most recent development.
