Power of Life -- Germination

It was before May and while most classes were writing thank-you cards for their mothers, I was wondering what else my students and I could do. Then, I came across an article about ancient palm seeds found in an excavation site. Israeli scientists could revitalize the 2000-year-old seeds and magically, they germinated and grew into tall plants. The story was a great inspiration: Power of life was definitely something worthy of celebration in the month to give thanks to mother's love.

And as beans were more accessible than 2000-year-old palm seeds, I decided to have my students observe the germination of beans and draw on their worksheets. Each group would get 4 beans and cups. They labeled each cup with different conditions: No water, No soil, No light, and Control.

Prediction: It was fun to have students to predict which bean under different conditions would germinate after one week.

Tah-dah!
After one week, my students observed each cup and drew.
In the picture below, Annie was my helper and wrote down different conditions. One member from each group came to the front and wrote checks and crosses to show which beans germinated and which didn't.
My little helper, Annie, wrote down the conditions on the board.

Kiki is coloring her observation.

After all the works were done, it was time to put them up! Talented artists had their worksheets on display as the classroom decoration.
